Weekly Photo Challenge: The Hue of You

At this point in my life, my hue changes with the wind,
so it was fortunate indeed for our time in Berlin to coincided with the Festival of Lights.
Brandenburg Gate,
built as a sign of peace in the late 1700's,
today supplies the perfect tourist filled stage for peaceful demonstrations.

When darkness covered the city,
the gate was in perfect harmony with the many hues of me.
The fact that this gate stands in the area of Berlin
completely surrounded by an unpeaceful wall for almost thirty years...
only adds to its dichotomy...
of turmoil...
and peace.

As the wall fell in 1989,
the Brandenburg Gate displayed its best hues,
becoming a symbol of freedom and the desire for unity.

Have a wonderful Wednesday.
What's your hue?

"The only monument of German reunification is progressively being destroyed. It attracts up to 5000 people from all over the world per day. The city government cannot continue to ignore the national significance of this memorial site." ~ East Side Gallery Blog

Ahhhh...
where to begin.

After discovering as much of this city as possible in one weekend,
perhaps the best place would be 'the wall'...
still standing sporadically around town as a reminder of a city
whose very soul was divided from 1961 until 1989.
A large section of the wall still intact can be found at East Side Gallery ESG,
which currently has an exhibit...
with mural size photos of walls still standing around the world.
ESG is in the process of applying for recognition as a world heritage site with UNESCO,
in an effort to stop construction in the area.

On the other side,
the untouchable side until after the wall fell...
this 1.3 km long section of the original 155 km,
 surrounding West Berlin,
and portrays the 'will of the people' viewpoints...
 still permeating...
in an attempt to preserve this piece of history for future generations.

Sections of the wall are sprinkled around town...
and beyond.

Once again,
my history knowledge was challenged.
Even though the building of the wall and the falling of the wall
all happened within my 'young' life,
memories were still fuzzy and in desperate need of a dusting.
Travel and the tactile learning it affords is the best for combating ignorance,
don't ya think?

Meanwhile...

Ren Man is lucky I could not fit this piece of the wall in my suitcase.
What a positive reminder for life.

Happy Tuesday.
