"I never weary of great churches. It is my favourite kind of mountain scenery. Mankind was never so happily inspired as when it made a cathedral." ~ Robert Louis Stevenson

Happy Labor Day...
to those of you in the USA...
meanwhile...
it is solid labor back in the UK.

One more post...
to finish up our quick trip to Glasgow...
way back when.
While 'the boys' were at a Ranger football game...
I spent the day...
at Glasgow Cathedral...
which was consecrated in 1197...

and "has never been unroofed...
and the worship of God...

has been carried out...
within its walls for more than 800 years."
Amazing!

When you enter this medieval church...
your eyes are immediately drawn to The Great West Window...
in the Nave known as...
"The Creation" by Francis Spear...

shown here with the modern clock...
which were both installed...
in 1958.

From the Nave...
you are able to see straight down the length of the cathedral...

87 meters...
or 285 feet...
(almost the length of a football field...
for you visual learners)...

into the worship area...

where natural sunlight...

fills the room...
and reflects off of the beautiful woodwork.

Looking up...
the open timber roof adds to the medieval feel.
 Now...
back in my hometown...
people just knew where their seat was in church...
and if you were a visitor...
you found out real fast...
if you were sitting in someone else's spot.
All of the sudden you would notice a sweet little lady hovering over you...
maybe even introducing herself to you...
all the while looking for somewhere else to sit...
like a lost puppy.
They have worked out that little problem...
with these nameplates...
that let you know who sits in pew #134.
Brilliant!!!
Kentigern, known as Mungo...
was a monk chosen by the King, clergy and people...
to be their bishop.

His tomb is in the lower church...
where they have a service every year to remember his life...

of which there are many legends...
and greatly impacted the first Coat of Arms of Glasgow...

The Bird that never flew,
The Tree that never grew,
The Bell that never rang,
The Fish that never swam.

It was very easy to lose track of time...
while visiting this cathedral and its grounds...
and I would hope that if you ever find yourself in Glasgow...
you take the time to visit.
