"London's Tower Bridge is one of the most recognizable bridges in the world. Its Victorian Gothic style stems from a law that forced the designers to create a structure that would be in harmony with the nearby Tower of London." ~ A View on Cities

The blame falls completely on the nursery rhyme and game we played as children in America...

London bridge is falling down...
falling down...
falling down...
London bridge is falling down...
my fair lady.

At that moment the suspended arms of two children facing each other...

would fall down and catch the unlucky child to be walking under the "bridge" when the verse is finished.

Did you ever play this game?

Interestingly enough...
when someone mentions the London Bridge...
anyone who played this game and sang this song as a child would naturally think of this impressively combined bascule (see-saw in french) and suspension bridge...
which is in fact the Tower Bridge...
finally completed after eight years, in 1894...

much later than the London Bridge seen here, flat and ordinary looking as can be.

While in London with a friend on vaca...

we had the opportunity to  see the Tower Bridge in action (they post a schedule on the link above)...
as its suspended arms made their way up with the help of hydraulics...
(click here to check out the specifics on the size of those towers and the length of the bridge)...
for two amazing...
sailing vessels...
who called ahead...
for passage further up the Thames River.

So...
Tower Bridge is falling down...
falling down...
falling down...
Tower Bridge is falling down...
my fair lady.

It just doesn't have the same ring to it.
What do you think?
