Donald Judd would hands down be my vote for the visionary who put Marfa on the map of the art world.
After passing through Marfa by train on his way to a military posting in California, he described to his family,
"an undamaged landscape"... 
and returned years later to purchase a portion of Fort D.A. Russell, to found The Chinati Foundation.

Filled with works of Judd, John Chamberlain and Dan Flavin, the collection has expanded to include works of other artists as well.
Many of the old barracks have become amazing spaces filled with exhibits...
while others wait patiently...
 accessorized in their vintage remnants of color.
