"I shall tell you of William Wallace. Historians from England will say that I am a liar, but history is written by those who have hanged heroes. The King of Scotland had died without a son, and the king of England, a cruel pagan known as Edward the Longshanks, claimed the throne for himself. Scotlandís nobles fought him, and fought each other, over the crown. So Longshanks invited them to talks of truce. No weapons, one page only. Among the farmers of that shire was Malcolm Wallace, a commoner, with his own lands. He had two sons: John and William." ~ Robert the Bruce

Dunnottar Castle...

was deemed worthy of being fought over...

and The Scots and The English spent many years winning and losing control of the prized possession.
After Alexander III, King of the Scots tragically died...

it did not take Edward I King of England long to occupy Dunnottar

in his move to dominate Scotland.

It is at this point, in 1297...
that William Wallace leaves his mark at Dunnottar...
on the sight of this very chapel...
where an earlier chapel made of earth and timber...
held many terrified English garrison as they took refuge...
when Wallace and his 'army' attacked...
and burned it and all of those inside to the ground.

Thank you to the Holloway Clan...
for their video montage of this beautiful site...
to the tune of none other...
than...
Braveheart!

Just think...
William Wallace and his army of untrained soldiers...
had to traverse that rugged terraine to get to the castle.

I can take only so much history at one sitting...
so that is all for today.
Come back tomorrow with your history hats on and we will explore some other beautiful areas inside the ruins.

Happy Wednesday!
