Welcome to town...
After bidding Flat Stanley adieux...
we explored Stavanger at a more leisurely pace...
and began to realize how much effort has been made
to incorporate the past and present...
of its thousand year old heritage...
from Viking battles...
to maritime history...
becoming a leader in the canning industry...
The Norwegian Canning Museum...
where they still smoke brisling sardines every Tuesday and Thursday...
and the energy capital in Norway...
Here is the Norwegian Petroleum Museum.
As we walked through Old Stavanger...
the preservation is admirable...
as 173 wooden buildings...
from the turn of the 18th century...
are still in use as houses...
art galleries...
and studios...
With all of these wooden houses...
it is no wonder they built the Valberg Tower...
in 1853 the town watchmen began to use it as a watchtower to warn the city of fires...
I love it at night...
