My Aberdeen Monday...

It has taken two years...
but we finally made our way across town to Footdee
the small fishing village affectionately referred to as 'Fittie',
near Aberdeen harbor.

Originally located near St. Clements church...
this unique area has been referenced as far back as 1398.
To make room for an expanding harbor,
the planned housing development
was designed and laid out in its current location...
at the east end of the harbor...
 known earlier as 'Fish Town'.

Officially, Footdee is the area from St. Clements Churchyard to 'Fish Town',
however, over the years, the name Footdee
became synonymous with this small village
provided for the fishermen and their families.
Twenty eight thatched roof houses, built around two squares,
facing inward,
like armor, protected against fierce winds
or anything else coming ashore.

Over the years...
two rows of homes were built down the middle of each square.

Walking the paths lined with streetlamps and history...
 is quaint enough...
but it's the 'tarry sheds' or outhouses originally built from drift wood and other found items...
 belonging to each cottage...
that captured my full attention.
Some 'sheds' have been expanded beyond the one room originals,
but each one is like pulling back the curtains and taking a peak into the personality of the residents of this little nook...
where embellishments provide a priceless amble through a...
courtesy of those that call this home.
Even the play area revolves around the sea...
just beyond...
where you are a short beach walk away from our favorite restaurant on the esplanade.

Happy Monday.
